Outdoor Activity: Ghyll Scrambling

Ghyll Scrambling

Ghyll scrambling, aka gill scrambling, gorge scrambling or gorge walking is one of our most popular outdoor activities, probably because it's exciting, engaging, requires collaboration and teamwork, and it's very, very wet.

A ghyll, or gill is a gorge in which a stream descends from the mountains, and ghyll scrambling involves scrambling amongst the boulders, under waterfalls, wading or swimming through pools, making your way up the gorge. There are also a few gorges that can be done in reverse, shooting the falls, jumping into pools as you descend.

There are gorges and ghylls throughout the UK, though they tend to be in the more mountainous areas, such as the Lake District, where we have a dozen or more superb ghyll scrambling sites.

Ghyll scrambling is very popular activity during school outdoor activity events, and as an element in our corporate team challenges and team building events, usually as the final challenge of the day, occasionally with a clue-find navigation route through the gorge.

A ghyll scramble or gorge walk might last from an hour up to four hours after which most people have partially dissolved.

Other outdoor activities that compliment ghyll scrambling in a multi-activity event or adventure journey include raft building, abseiling, canoeing and rock climbing.

We provide all necessary ghyll scrambling equipment with highly experienced and professionally qualified instructors.
