Open Canoe Coaching for Beginners

Dates: 2nd July 2017

Location: Lake District; Windermere, Coniston, Ullswater chosen according to majority demand;

 

For: beginners and improving paddlers who want to develop their foundation skills and ability in open canoes, and especially those who have recently purchased their own canoes;

 

Content: Book a two-hour open canoe coaching session, and your coach will observe your current paddling practice and coach you through the most appropriate skills and techniques, enabling you to rapidly develop a more effective and efficient paddling style.

A Short Introduction to Experiential Development Task Design and Composition

Dates yet to be arranged: likely to be April or May 2017;

 

Cost: £60 (pilot discount 50%);

Location: Kendal, Cumbria;

 

For: Professional people involved in outdoor experiential development, especially those seeking to further develop their range of tasks and to enhance the learning and contiguous benefit for their clients. This knowledge can directly increase the marketability and financial value of experiential development services.

 

This is a one-day introduction to the foundations of effective task design and composition used for experiential development (aka teambuilding exercises, team development tasks, command tasks, team, leadership and personal challenges, etc).

 

It includes an exploration of the protocols that underpin successful design and composition of experiential development tasks for use indoors and outdoors, including short illustrative tasks, icebreakers, team challenges, day tasks, journeys, leadership projects, etc.

Wild Camping in the Lake District

For: people who would like to wild camp in the UK without damage to themselves or their environment;

Open Canoe Foundation Skills Coaching in the Lake District

Date: 27th May 2017

Cost: £40 per person per session;

Location: Lake District;

 

For: beginners and intermediate paddlers who want to develop their foundation skills and ability in open canoes;

 

Ratio: Max 1:4

 

These half-day open canoe coaching sessions focus on the foundation paddling skills, i.e. the skills that you might use any time you paddle. Any experienced paddler knows that these foundation skills take time to develop, and coaching accelerates development. These sessions will be on still water.

Sea Kayak Rescue and Towing Workshop

Cost: £60 per person;

Location: Venue to be arranged;

 

For: beginners and intermediate sea kayakers who want to develop their self-rescue, peer rescue and towing skills;

 

Ratio: Max 1:6

 

These full-day sea kayak coaching sessions are aimed at sea kayakers who want to become more responsible, less dependent and perhaps take on leadership roles in their peer group. All regular sea paddlers should gain these skills as soon as possible.

Navigation for Hillwalkers

Dates by arrangement;

Location: Venue to be arranged; Lake District, Snowdonia, Yorkshire Dales; etc.

 

For: Hillwalkers who want to learn how to navigate effectively in the UK

 

Ratio: Max 1:4

 

These one-day coaching workshops start at the level and capability of each individual participant, developing strong and reliable foundation navigation skills using a map and compass. The whole day is spent outdoors, and might cover any and all of these topics:

  • OS map orientation, scales and features;
  • Speed and distance;
  • Pacing and timing;
  • Compass bearings;
  • Line features and heading off;
  • Feature checklists;
  • Contours and aspects;
  • Back bearings, transit bearings and tri-sections;
  • Route planning;
  • Emergency and low visibility tactics;

Open Canoe Stillwater Rescue and Safety Workshop

Location: Venue to be arranged; Lake District;

 

For: Novice and beginner open canoe paddlers who want to develop their independence with basic safety, self-rescue and towing skills;

 

Ratio: Max 1:6

 

These full-day open canoe coaching sessions are aimed at paddlers who want to become more responsible, less dependent and perhaps take on leadership roles in their peer group. These skills are essential for open canoe paddlers on expeditions and open canoe journeys;

  • Preparation for a paddle;
  • Risk assessment;
  • Dealing with likely incidents;
  • Call-for-help protocols;
  • Shout, reach, throw, go;
  • Towing;
  • Boat emptying techniques;
  • Getting back into your own boat; re-entry and assisted re-entry;
  • Deep water rescues;

Night Hike on Helvellyn

5th August 2017. Other dates by arrangement in May, June July and August;

 

Cost: £40 per person;

 

Course reference: NHH-01;

 

Location: Glenridding, Lake District;

 

For: experienced hikers and hillwalkers who would like to ascend Helvellyn at night (under a full moon if the weather allows) with a professional mountain leader;

 

This is a night-time hiking experience, starting around 9:30pm hopefully with a full moon low in the south east. The walk is around 15km, so it's a reasonable challenge and therefore only for fairly fit and experienced hill walkers (call us for a chat if you're not sure).
