Outdoor Activity Challenges for Charity Fundraising

19th September 2017

After a relatively uneventful and unexciting day in the office, I took a phone call that changed my mind-set for the better: A potential client, having been let down by the weather on a charity fundraising dragon-boat race, called to ask if we could set up another challenge using improvised raft building and paddling in the Lake District enabling them to earn their sponsorship and work together as a team in the process. We do like to support such groups who put in so much effort for the benefit of others, in this case, a cancer charity, which is a very worthwhile cause. So this afternoon has turned especially positive and given me another event to plan.

Schools Outdoor Adventure Activity Event

15th September 2017

St Paul's School Outdoor Adventure Activity Day: This is an annual event that we've run since the late 90s and is the final day of the year-groups residential. More schools are realising the value of early residential's to help the year-group bond and outdoor activities offer the benefit of creating a shared experience at the beginning of the year that will significantly strengthen relationships.

Sea Kayak Journeying and Coaching Weekend

8th-10th September 2017

Our Event Director, Simon McElroy, has been sea kayaking on the east coast around Whitby and Staithes this weekend with a peer paddle from Whitby to Runswick Bay and back on Saturday and a sea kayak coaching day for Cumbria Canoeists on Sunday which ended up as a coaching session confined to Runswick Bay as the forecast wind increased above the level at which a safe journey north to Saltburn could be achieved.

Schools Outdoor Adventure Activity Event

6th & 7th June 2017

In this week every year for the past 19 or 20 years, kids from St Michael's School participate in a programme of outdoor adventure activities in Borrowdale in the Lake District. It's often their first experience of adventure activities and the emphasis on during the activities is to create a positive experience for each child. The activities include rock climbing, canoeing, ghyll scrambling and hillwalking and, this week we substituted bushcraft for the rock climbing as the weather was atrociously wet on Tuesday. As always, the kids from St Michael's School have been an absolute pleasure to work with; a credit to their school.

Sea Kayak Skills Transference Coaching

26th May 2017

This morning we paddled on the Lune estuary from Glasson Dock with the coaching focused on the transference of skills from river kayaking and open canoeing to sea kayaking. My client was a sports scientist with the benefit of huge worldwide paddling experience in canoes and river kayaks which made the process extremely enjoyable, and the nature of transference especially interesting making this an exceptionally positive experience.

Sea Kayak Foundation Skills Coaching

20th May 2017

Another of my sequential sea kayak foundation coaching workshops for beginners and improvers, based today on Derwentwater in the Lake District as the coastal forecast was a touch too lively for effective coaching at this level. The focus for the day was consolidation of paddle strokes, manoeuvring, turning and steering and paddling with rhythm, with a gusty F3-4 from the southwest. My clients took on all challenges and visibly advanced in their skillset.

Hen Event in the Lake District

13th May 2017

Today we've hosted an activity day for a Hen party in the Lake District; a sublimely pleasant day starting with a blindfold lead through bluebell woods, a picnic amongst the bluebells in full bloom followed by an afternoon of rock climbing in the Langdale Valley. Despite a slightly grey start, the sun came out as promised to end the day. Fabulous!

Happy New Year!

Where did 2016 go! That was one of the fastest years I've experienced.

May we wish all our customers and associates a prosperous and exciting New Year.

Now, looking forwards, we're planning a raft of coaching events in open canoes and sea kayaks, and developing a new workshop exploring the fundamentals of writing and designing experiential tasks. Oh, and wondering where to go on our adventure journeys in 2017. Any suggestions?

National Trust Announce Plans to Charge Outdoor Learning Providers

It has come to our attention this month that the National Trust plans to charge providers of outdoor learning who use their land in a number of locations as a precursor to the practice becoming nationwide. Having been supportive of the National Trust for many years, we're now in an uncomfortable position. Whilst we agree with the notion of a membership organisation levying a charge for non-members at private properties, we strongly disagree with the practice of charging educators on land placed in trust for the benefit of the Nation. The National Trust have since changed their tune a little but have identified groups numbering over 25 people as their target, regardless of whether those groups are managed by an educator or otherwise.

Stand-Up Paddleboard Training (British Canoeing)

Simon McElroy grabbed a last-minute opportunity to do a Stand Up Paddle Board Discipline specific training module with Caroline Carr which turned out to be far more productive than expected offering a greater respect for this craft and how adaptable they can be even in the hands of a novice.

Level 1 Paddlesports Coach (British Canoeing)

Simon McElroy went back to school for a week and, with the capable direction and coaching of Ashley St.John-Claire and his colleagues took on the Level 1 Paddlesports Coach course in surprisingly warm conditions. The course was run from John and Sarah Platt’s Platty+ base on Derwentwater in the Lake District and was an exceptionally valuable learning opportunity.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (British Canoeing)

Early in March in Baltic weather Simon McElroy took the British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training in preparation for the British Canoeing Level 1 Paddlesports Course the following week. The course, run by Newton Rigg College, was held on Ullswater with water temperature at 4°C and as the course involves a significant amount of wet time those conditions made it a particularly high-value experience.
